Labor working in coalition with nonprofits, faith groups, environmentalists

Labor will be working in several coalitions this year at the Minnesota Legislature, said Brad Lehto, Minnesota AFL-CIO legislative director.

The Minnesota is Watching coalition, involving labor, the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits, and the faith community, will redirect its efforts from work at the Capitol to targeted legislative districts, Lehto said. “It’s going to be more of a grassroots effort, district by district.”

The Stop Service Cuts campaign, comprised primarily of labor unions, also will continue, Lehto said.

Labor also will be working with environmental organizations as part of the new Blue-Green Alliance. “We will work together where we can agree and disagree when we have to disagree,” Lehto said.

The Blue-Green Alliance will focus on long-term transportation needs (including the Northstar rail corridor), new renewable energy development, and creation of green building standards.

Labor?s coalition work to protect voting rights, in conjunction with the Council of Nonprofits and the League of Women Voters, will continue last year?s work, Lehto said.
