Rally Thursday to save quality mail service

The demonstration will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. outside the post office at 100 S. First St., downtown Minneapolis.

The event is part of "a national week of picketing to inform citizens and press about a recently uncovered secret Postal Service plan that could hurt mail service in Minnesota, Minneapolis, St Paul and surrounding suburbs," the Minneapolis and St. Paul locals of the American Postal Workers Union said.

"If implemented, the plan could mean slower, less reliable service for our area. Mail would be collected earlier, but delivered later in the day and could be delayed an entire week or longer."

The U.S. Postal Service, with the support of large advertising mailers who presort their mail, has been pursuing a policy of consolidating operations.

The APWU has set up a hotline, 1-877-7-OUR-MAIL, to provide more information on its Save Our Service campaign.
