Working people will advocate for their concerns at the state Capitol through several "Days on the Hill" organized by unions. The first happens Wednesday -- the opening day of the 2006 legislative session -- when public employees plan to rally.
Nearly 800 members of AFSCME Councils 5 and 65 are registered to rally in the rotunda at 12:30 p.m. and meet with their state legislators that afternoon to roll out their legislative priorities:
-- Prevent future shutdowns of government
-- Require public ownership and operation of correctional facilities
-- Protect and fund the quality education, transportation, health and human services provided by public employees
-- Stop private takeover of public services
-- Invest in child care
The theme of this year's mobilization is "public services are not for sale." Wounds remain raw from the government shutdown that locked nearly 9,300 state employees out of work last July when Governor Pawlenty and lawmakers failed to reach a budget agreement, the union said.
Union members will reference the shutdown failure by wearing stickers that say "I know what you did last summer."
Other union Days on the Hill scheduled this year include:
Transportation Trades, March 13
Industrial Unions, March 20
Minnesota Nurses Association, March 28.
Service Employees International Union, April 6
