City workers began a strike outside City Hall this morning at 7AM. “Union busting city officials including the mayor and the city council continue to squander thousands of taxpayer dollars on fees for attorneys that could be used to settle the contract,” said Kurt Errickson of AFSCME Council 14.

3M begins 300 layoffs at St. Paul plant

Layoffs are expected to begin April 22 as 3M starts shutting down abrasives manufacturing at its East Side plant. Overall, at least 250 production jobs and an additional 50 maintenance jobs will be eliminated by the end of the year, said Dennis Ramberg, secretary-treasurer of PACE Local 7-75, which represents the production workers.

Smead workers choose fewer hours over layoffs

Workers at Smead Manufacturing have voted to cut their workweek to 32 hours, rather than put about 100 of their co-workers out of a job. In doing so, they are taking advantage of a state program that helps companies retain key employees during recessions.
