East Side Freedom Library program to consider Labor Day’s origins

The East Side Freedom Library will host “The History of Labor Day,” a free, public event to explore how Labor Day became a holiday, from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 28. The event will feature readings from historic labor speeches, music and solidarity.

Home care workers announce victory in historic union election

On Tuesday, Minnesota’s home care workers etched a new chapter in the state’s history, alongside the miners who organized the Iron Range, the truck drivers who shut down Minneapolis in 1934 and the women who led landmark strikes by teachers in 1946 and 1970 and by nurses in 1984.

Who Built Our Capitol? to air on Labor Day

The Labor Education Service video documentary, Who Built Our Capitol? about the men and women who constructed the Minnesota State Capitol Building, will be broadcast on Labor Day by Twin Cities Public Television.

Postal Service under fire for closings, subcontracting to Staples

A National Labor Relations Board official slammed the U.S. Postal Service’s scheme to subcontract services to Staples stores. And half the U.S. Senate now opposes management’s plan to close 82 more distribution centers.

Visit Labor Pavilion at the Minnesota State Fair

Education and entertainment about unions and workers will be featured at the Minnesota AFL-CIO Labor Pavilion at the Minnesota State Fair. The pavilion is open throughout the fair, which starts Thursday, Aug. 21, and runs through Labor Day, Sept. 1.
