The International Labor Communications Association has presented 13 awards to Minnesota’s labor media, including Workday Minnesota.
As Congressional leaders plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act in January, grassroots leaders from ISAIAH, TakeAction Minnesota, the Land Stewardship Project, Main Street Alliance of Minnesota, the Minnesota Nurses Association and AFSCME held actions at both the offices of Republican Congressmen Erik Paulsen and Tom Emmer, voicing their concerns about the future of healthcare in the state.
After more than 100 years, the workers who built the Minnesota State Capitol, including six who were killed in the construction, will be honored in the statehouse. On Dec.15, a jury met to select designs for a commemorative plaque from among more than 50 entries submitted by sixth graders across the state.
While the holidays are a time to count our blessings, the season also serves as a reminder of those less fortunate in our communities. Luckily, there are countless ways people can give back locally, and members across Minnesota’s construction and building trades unions are first in line to give of their time, resources and expertise.
The worker-led group Making Change at Walmart rolled out a campaign Wednesday to hold the nation’s largest retailer accountable for the strain its stores put on local resources. Walmart refuses to hire security officers, which costs taxpayers when local police have to respond to petty crime.
At any given time, 9,300 people in Minnesota are homeless. On Thursday night, a vigil and march were held in Minneapolis to recognize those who have lost their lives on the streets, and two more events are planned between now and Christmas.
A new analysis by four economists, three of whom serve on President Barack Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers, shows the minimum wage hikes that 18 states and Washington, D.C., have enacted since the last federal increase a decade ago have raised the pay of the lowest-paid workers without cutting the numbers of jobs or hours they work.
