NLRB recognizes organizing by graduate student workers

In a decision that reopens a whole universe of unorganized workers to unions, the National Labor Relations Board ruled on Tuesday that private college teaching assistants and research assistants are “employees” under labor law and can be unionized.

Protest targets Franklin Street Bakery

Since its organizing drive began this spring, Local 22 of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union has filed “at least a dozen” charges with the National Labor Relations Board alleging Franklin Street Bakery violated workers’ rights.

OSHA slams Tyson with fines after gruesome injury

OSHA has slammed the nation’s largest poultry processor, Tyson Foods, with more than $263,000 in fines after an unguarded conveyor belt in Tyson’s Center, Texas, plant, caught a worker’s finger and dragged his hand into a deboning machine – amputating the finger.
