Forum to explore balancing civil rights and security

A five-person panel including Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch will discuss how recent federal laws are affecting constitutional liberties, the rights of immigrants and the future of communities at a program titled “Balancing Civil Rights and Security” Thursday, Jan. 13.

Minnesota Freedom Ride to crisscross the state

The Minnesota Freedom Ride, a statewide mobilization “to reward work and restore democracy for all,” will begin Thursday with buses crisscrossing the state. Modeled after last year’s national Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, the Minnesota ride will focus on cities in Greater Minnesota that have growing immigrant populations.

Temporary workers seek union in Owatonna

For more than 70 years, families have journeyed 1,350 miles from the Texas-Mexico border to work in canning operations in Owatonna, Minn. Soon, the approximately 100 temporary employees of Lakeside Foods may form their own, independent union ? the United Workers of the North.
