AFL-CIO unions gather under the theme ‘We Are Minnesota’

The biennial event will focus heavily on this year’s elections, with speeches scheduled by a number of elected officials, including U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Congressman Tim Walz and Governor Mark Dayton. In addition, delegates will take part in activities to support labor-endorsed candidates.

Union leaders who will address the convention include Liz Shuler, secretary-treasurer of the national AFL-CIO, and Roberta Reardon, co-president of AFTRA-SAG, the new union formed by the merger of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and the Screen Actors Guild.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is a federation of more than 1,000 local unions representing some 300,000 workers. The convention theme reflects the broad nature of the labor movement, the federation said.

“We are the people who build, educate, care, entertain, inform, protect and serve,” the AFL-CIO said in a statement. “We are working people in the private and public sector. We take pride in our work and do our work well. We are your friends, family and neighbors. We help organize people who want a voice at work. We are civic-minded. We vote in high numbers. We stand up for the rights of others. ‘We Are Minnesota.’”

The AFL-CIO convention will be preceded on Sunday by a Young Worker Convention and a State Retiree Council Convention.
