AFSCME Council 5 supports marriage equality

State legislators are within weeks of a controversial vote on SF925 and HF1054, which would make Minnesota the 10th state to legalize same-sex marriages.

“Everyone should be able to marry the person they love,” said Eliot Seide, executive director of AFSCME Council 5. “No one should be singled out and denied the economic protections and cultural privileges associated with matrimony. There is no substitute for marriage – civil unions are separate and unequal.”

Seide explained the union’s unanimous decision to support marriage equality: “Same-sex couples pay taxes in Minnesota. They vote here, run businesses here, and serve in our military. They work hard and contribute to our communities, and they have children who deserve to grow up in stable families with married parents.”

“AFSCME has been on the frontlines of every struggle for human rights, civil rights and worker rights,” said Seide. “We were the first union to join the campaign that successfully defeated the hurtful marriage amendment in 2012. Now it’s time for loving same-sex couples to have the freedom to marry in the state they call home.”

AFSCME Council 5 is a union of 43,000 workers who advocate for excellence in public services, dignity in the workplace, and opportunity and prosperity for all workers.
