Hennepin County workers will receive a 4 percent raise under a tentative contract agreement reached between the county and AFSCME Council 5.
The parties reached a tentative agreement on a new two-year contract Tuesday after a 27-hour marathon session of bargaining. The AFSCME negotiating team unanimously recommended acceptance of the package.
"It's time to celebrate ? Hennepin County workers will now receive their first cost-of-living raise in three years," said Eliot Seide, executive director of Council 5. "Most workers will get a 4 percent raise ? or more ? for both 2006 and 2007."
The union successfully fought off the employer's attempt to force singles to pay monthly health care premiums. This victory will save employees more than $1 million over the life of the contract.
In addition to a raise, nearly 29 percent of bargaining unit members will receive a 1 to 3 percent market adjustment to bring wages of certain job classes up to marketplace levels.
The union's Master Committee will meet Nov. 21 to vote on a recommendation to membership. AFSCME said it will hold a meeting Nov. 29 at the Minneapolis Convention Center to explain the contract and begin the ratification vote. Balloting is expected to continue at worksites in early December, the union said.
Locals 34, 552, 1719, 2822, 2864 and 2938 of AFSCME represent more than 4,000 Hennepin County workers.
