The rally will be at 11 a.m. outside the Hennepin County Government Center, 5th St. and 4th Ave. in downtown Minneapolis. The event is part of the "Justice for Janitors" campaign to seek a fair contract for the workers who clean downtown office buildings.
"This year we are trying to win health insurance for our families, which is a key issue for all Minnesota\'s working families, especially the poorest," said Service Employees International Union Local 26, which represents 4,400 janitors in the Twin Cities.
"Rather than look for ways to move forward, the Employers Association has proposed to make things even worse. They want to have the power to eliminate all full-time jobs in the market, which could mean reducing janitors in the Twin Cities to part time jobs at $9.55 per hour with no benefits."
Last week, Houston janitors claimed victory in their effort to get a first contract. Nationwide, Justice for Janitors campaigns are underway in several cities, including Miami, Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
