The demonstration will start at 3:30 p.m. outside the Butler Building, 510 1st Ave. N. Swervo Development and its owner, Ned Abdul, want to construct a three-story addition on the nearby Wyman Partridge Building for use as a restaurant.
Abdul has been the subject of protests during construction of high-end condominiums at the Whitney Landmark Residence, Sexton and Herschel buildings, all in downtown Minneapolis.
During demolition to turn a hotel into the Whitney residence, Building Trades organizers documented massive violations of basic safety requirements. Workers told union organizers they were being paid $6 an hour for the demolition work, in cash, with no benefits.
Abdul denied any knowledge of the conditions, union leaders said, but later hired a responsible contractor to finish the project.
To go forward, the proposed restaurant project will require the city to grant variances for both parking and the size of the addition.
