The rally will run from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, on the Capitol mall side of the Department of Transportation building, 395 John Ireland Blvd., UNITE HERE Local 17 announced.
Local 17 has had successive collective bargaining agreements with several different food service providers at the state office buildings since 1958. The three Capitol complex cafeterias are located in the Centennial Building, the Department of Transportation and the 600 Building.
But the state has awarded operation of the cafeterias to a new company, Wayzata-based Taher, Inc., that has refused to recognize the union and did not hire the 18 long-term employees when it took over operation of the cafeterias. Workers were told they could apply for their positions, which would now be part-time with no benefits, the union said.
Local 17 has called a boycott of the three cafeterias.
