Northwest flight attendants elect new union

Northwest flight attendants elected the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA as their new bargaining representative in ballots counted Thursday by the National Mediation Board. The new union said it will immediately begin talks with the airline, which is seeking to have a bankruptcy court overturn the current flight attendants’ contract.

Teamsters to start card-check organizing at Overnite

Reviving a campaign they suspended
several years ago, the Teamsters will try to organize
the 15,000 drivers for Overnite Transportation, but
with a difference: They can do so via card-check. The card-check agreement was announced at the
Teamsters convention in Las Vegas.

Fewer workers use NLRB to form unions

According to an analysis of National Labor Relations Board data by the Bureau of National Affairs, fewer workers are using the NLRB election process to organize. Instead, 70 percent of the private-sector workers who formed unions in 2005 did so through majority sign-up agreements.

Tech workers at Fridley hospital join SEIU

The 127 tech employees at Allina-owned Unity Hospital in Fridley have voted to join Service Employees International Union Local 113. The vote comes after the recent agreement between Allina and Local 113 for a new contract and strategic alliance to improve the delivery of health care in Minnesota.

Program focuses on struggle by Utah coal miners

A Utah miner will speak about the struggle to organize a union and win safer working conditions at a program Saturday, March 25, at 7 p.m. at the UFCW Local 789 hall, 266 Hardman Ave., South St. Paul. He’ll also discuss a landmark lawsuit that threatens workers’ rights to free speech.

Workers organize at Fort Snelling

Building service workers for a private contractor at the federal government’s Whipple Building at Fort Snelling voted 6-0 in a National Labor Relations Board election to join Local 70 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.
