March to honor Justice for Janitors

SEIU Local 26 will commemorate the 15th anniversary of the first Justice For Janitors campaign with a march through downtown Minneapolis Wednesday, June 15. The Twin Cities march will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the United Labor Centre, 312 Central Ave. SE, and end with a 12:30 p.m. rally at the Hennepin County Government Center.

Panel to recall AFL-CIO merger, discuss labor’s future

It has been 50 years since the American Federation of Labor merged with the Congress of Industrial Organizations to form the largest labor federation in U.S. history. Four Minnesota labor leaders who were closely involved in the merger will speak Monday, May 23, as part of the “Untold Stories” labor history series.

The Wobblies left legacy of militancy, organizing

They started in the mining district around Butte, Mont. They were the forerunners, in the U.S., of the industrial union movement. They openly challenged capitalism. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Industrial Workers of the World, the leading radical labor movement in the early 20th century.

AFL-CIO leaders propose revamp plan

A plan to revamp the AFL-CIO, issued by its top three leaders, calls for more money for organizing and mobilizing, year-round issues campaigns, more coordinated strategic organizing and voluntary union mergers. But some top union officers say the plan fails to devote enough resources to organizing.
