The export of U.S. factory jobs overseas will hit home hard in Galesburg, Ill., on Sept. 16. That's when its long-established Maytag plant, the town's main employer, will close for good, throwing 1,600 workers onto the jobless rolls.
Maytag moved production to Reynosa, Mexico, said the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, the union representing the Maytag workers.
In a Labor Day rally in Galesburg, U.S. Senate nominee Barack Obama, a Democrat, pledged to fight to keep such jobs at home.
Reversing the trend of sending America?s high-paying jobs overseas "starts right here, right now, with us," he said.
"This fight cannot end here," added IAM Local 2063 President Dave Bevard, who has discussed the damage from the move elsewhere around the U.S. "For every good job that is lost here, up to four more are destroyed as the shock wave spreads throughout the community. The long-term effect on towns like Galesburg is devastating," Bevard added.
