Much as Paul and Sheila Wellstone did during their lifetimes, the documentary about them is bringing people together in communities across Minnesota, most recently in Luverne.
Young and old alike attended the southwest Minnesota premiere of Wellstone!, which chronicles the couple's commitment to economic and social justice, culminating in Paul's election to the U.S. Senate in 1990.
The screening, at the Historic Palace Theater in downtown Luverne Friday night, was sponsored by the Southwest Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO. The event was used to increase awareness and raise funds for the Southwest Crisis Center. Sheila Wellstone was a national leader in the effort to stop domestic violence.
Many of the film's audience gathered at the Pizza Ranch after the screening for discussion and to share memories of the Wellstones. And in the best tradition of the Wellstones, people also organized around an important issue. They discussed Bush administration proposals that threaten Social Security and signed a petition calling on Congress to save Social Security.
Minnesota AFL-CIO President Ray Waldron (above) shared memories of Paul and Sheila Wellstone with the audience at the Pizza Ranch after the screening. Discussing the film in the lobby of the theater (below) were Waldron, Luverne Mayor Andy Steensma and Luverne High School senior Sadie Dietrich. | |
