Chris, a university custodian represented by Teamsters Local 320, took part in "Teamster Tuesday" to show support for his wife, Jane, a striking member of AFSCME Local 3800.
Clerical, technical and health care workers have been on strike across University of Minnesota campuses since Sept. 5. Custodial and food service workers represented by the Teamsters reached a contract settlement shortly before the walkout began.
The Vegas have worked at the university for 10 years and say they are frustrated with the way workers are treated by top administrators.
"You see the disrespect when you have to sit across the table from them," said Jane Vega, who was on the Local 3800 bargaining committee six years ago.
"They say they don\'t have the money," she noted. "But they had the money for the Teamsters."
Chris Vega is happy with the 3 percent pay raise – plus step increases – that Local 320 was able to negotiate. He credits his union bargaining committee for its negotiating skills – but also thinks the university is engaging in "divide and rule."
The administration\'s final offer to AFSCME was 2.25 percent for clerical and technical workers and 2.5 percent for health care workers.
The fact that the administration is offering less to AFSCME members shows "it\'s down to a case of personal animosity on the part of executive decision makers at the university," Chris Vega said. "I think they are punishing workers for going on strike in 2003."
In the fall of 2003, AFSCME clericals walked off the job for two weeks in a dispute over the high cost of health care benefits.
While she walks the line, Jane Vega remains hopeful. "The university can\'t go on without us," she said.
