Election year gets underway at Tuesday’s precinct caucuses

The caucuses begin each political party’s process for endorsing candidates and for adopting a party platform.

This year, the caucuses will feature a non-binding straw poll for the many candidates for governor in the DFL and Republican parties, with the results sure to be highly scrutinized.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO has not made an endorsement in the governor’s race. Many unions have made endorsements for governor, however, and they will be encouraging their members to attend their precinct caucuses to run as delegates to senate district conventions.

Minnesota’s precinct caucuses are an easy entry point into the political process, so if you’ve never attended before, make this the year to get involved!

For more information on the precinct caucuses, visit the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.

The site features contact information for each of Minnesota’s political parties plus a
“Caucus Finder” to help you locate the local caucus for your party.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO has prepared a list of sample resolutions for precinct caucuses, resolutions that can help shape party platforms. The resolutions and other precinct caucus resources are available on the federation\’s website.

The caucuses are open to anyone eligible to vote in November.
