The labor community has opened a food bank to give support to striking transit workers, Bill McCarthy, president of the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council, announced.
Housed in the Minneapolis Labor Center, located at Central Ave. and University Ave., it is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Donations may be dropped off in Suites 524 or 542. All striking workers are welcome to come in and pick up food, McCarthy said.
Donations are expected from affiliated unions, community members and businesses.
"Union members at Metro Transit are making a tremendous and courageous sacrifice by going on strike," said McCarthy. "They are standing up to stop the backsliding that all workers are seeing in their standards of living, and they're standing up for affordable health care.
"The 120 unions and 75,000 union members affiliated with the Central Labor Union Council are giving these strikers our full support."
For more information on the food bank, contact Mary Ystesund, 612-379-8133, or Kyle Makarios, 612-379-4206.
