A five-person panel including Minnesota Attorney General Mike Hatch will discuss how recent federal laws are affecting constitutional liberties, the rights of immigrants and the future of communities at a program titled "Balancing Civil Rights and Security" Thursday, Jan. 13.
The program, which is free and open to the public, will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the St. Louis Park City Hall, 5005 Minnetonka Boulevard. Following the panelists? presentations, the audience will be invited to participate in a question and answer period.
Hatch, who has extensively studied the USA PATRIOT Act, will provide an overview of its specific provisions and discuss how the act has changed law enforcement policy.
Matt Ehling of the Minnesota Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC) will present a civil libertarian perspective on post-9/11 security policies such as the PATRIOT Act, and will discuss BORDC initiatives to help ensure that new security policies comply with the Constitution.
Chuck Samuelson of the Minnesota Civil Liberties Union will discuss the freedoms provided by the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Constitution and how they apply to the lives of both citizens and recent immigrants to the United States.
Jorge Saavedra, Chief Legal Counsel, Centro Legal, will discuss the many changes to immigration law since 9/11, and will outline the impact these changes have had on the rights of immigrants to the United States.
Gail Dorfman, Hennepin County Commissioner, will discuss how local city and police officials can work together to ensure citizen and immigrant rights while providing a secure environment for all.
Vic Rosenthal, executive director of Jewish Community Action will moderate the event.
