Humorist and political commentator Jim Hightower and workshops on issues ranging from civil disobedience to school closings are featured at the "Free Democracy Summit" underway this weekend in Duluth.
The event begins Friday night with a dinner and runs through Sunday evening at several venues in Duluth. Many of the programs will be held at Harbor City School, 332 W Michigan St.
Hightower will keynote a dinner Saturday night. Other major speakers include Mark Ritchie, director of the Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy, and Dr. Steven Miles, former U.S. Senate candidate and advocate for health care reform. Both will address the Friday welcome dinner.
Workshop topics include education, living wages, journalism ethics, water privatization, civil liberties and many others. The summit also is filled with many musical, theater and cultural events.
