Governor says it’s time to go on the offense

“People ask me, what will happen if there is a DFL majority in the [Minnesota] House and Senate. I say, ‘Progress.’

Governor Mark Dayton addressed the 2012 Minnesota AFL-CIO convention in Rochester.

“The last two years have been mostly playing defense and my vetoes blocking some of the worst legislation possible. To get this state back to where it needs to be, we need a DFL governor and a DFL Legislature and this November’s our chance.”

Dayton pledged that, with a DFL majority, he would “get the richest Minnesotans to pay their fair share of taxes.” The revenue would help maintain critical public services and the state’s quality of life.

Republican lawmakers, in contrast, have simply pushed budget problems into the future by borrowing from school districts in order to maintain tax breaks for the wealthy, Dayton said.

Dayton, who is midway through his four-year term, also urged support for Democrats at the federal level.

“We need to re-elect President Obama and keep this country’s economic recovery moving forward,” he said. “We need to re-elect Amy Klobuchar [to the U.S. Senate], Congressman Tim Walz and pick up seats in the 6th and 8th Districts,” currently held by Republicans Michele Bachmann and Chip Cravaack.

“You made the difference for me in 2010,” Dayton told union members. “You can make the difference again in 2012.”
