Hennepin County locals begin planning for negotiations

The current contracts expire Dec. 31, 2009.

The county faces $200 million in cuts over the next two years, AFSCME Local 34 reported, with budget cuts of 10-15 percent expected.

“It will be difficult to walk away with a contract settlement that pleases everyone — perhaps difficult to please anyone, but that will be our mission in 2009 — a fair and just contract settlement,” said Wes Volkenant, AFSCME Local 34 vice president.

While the six locals work together through their AFSCME Hennepin County Policy Committee, each local will be making its own contract proposal to the county.
