Labor stands united behind Twin Cities janitors

At a news conference at Minneapolis City Hall, Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council President Bill McCarthy and Teamsters Local 120 Secretary-Treasurer Brad Slawson, Jr., joined other union, community and religious leaders and elected officials to support the members of Service Employees International Union Local 26,

Local 26 members voted Jan. 13 to authorize a strike by 4,200 janitors if necessary. Employers then requested a return to bargaining, with negotiations set for next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Local 26 President Javier Morillo-Alicea said.

"We are hoping for the best and preparing for the worst," he said.

"We want the employees to know the entire labor movement stands in support of Local 26 members in the Twin Cities," said McCarthy. "These workers are fighting for all workers."

The Rev. Grant Stevensen, a leader in the ISAIAH coalition of 85 Twin Cities area congregations and a pastor at St. Matthew\’s Lutheran Church in St. Paul, called on employers to work in good faith to reach a settlement.

"The lack of access to affordable health care is a moral crisis and we cannot sit on the sidelines as this problem worsens," he said. Of the 4,200 janitors currently covered by the contract with metro-area cleaning companies, only 14 can afford the family health care coverage offered.

If a walkout occurs, the union said the strike would over unfair labor practices committed by the employers. The previous contract expired Dec. 31.
