Voting continues until 5 p.m. Monday at the United Labor Centre in Minneapolis. Michelle Sommers, ATU Local 1005 president, said votes will be counted and the results announced by 6 p.m.

If members reject the contract, Sommers said, negotiations would resume immediately. Negotiation sessions already are scheduled for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of this week, she reported.

Voting "no" on the contract does not authorize a strike, Sommers noted.

The agreement covers about 2,200 workers, including bus operators, train operators, mechanics and others. The current agreement expires July 31.

Unlike some Twin City area labor unions, ATU Local 1005 did not approve a labor peace agreement for the period of the Republican National Convention.

Metro Transit seeks rate increase
The push to conclude ATU Local 1005\’s contract with Metro Transit comes at the same time that the regional transit agency is seeking a proposed rate increase.

The agency reports a projected $15 million shortfall in the state fiscal year that begins July 1, resulting from higher fuel costs an a lower-than-expected revenues from the Motor Vehicle Sales Tax, which helps pay for transit.
Metro Transit is concluding a series of public hearings on the proposed fare increase. The final hearing will be Tuesday, July 15, from 5:30–6:30 p.m. at Seward Square Apartments (Meeting Room), 2121 South 9th Street, Minneapolis.
