‘Made in LA’ screens Dec. 5

As part of the Labor & Community Film Series, "Made in L.A." will screen at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the University of Minnesota Law School, 229 19th Ave. So., Minneapolis (Room 25).  A panel discussion will follow the film.

"Made in L.A.," produced in 2007, follows the remarkable journey of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment factories and their struggle for self-empowerment as they wage a three-year battle to bring a major clothing retailer to the negotiating table.

In intimate verité style, "Made in L.A." offers a rare and poignant glimpse into this "other" California, where immigrants in many industries toil long hours for subminimum wages, fighting for an opportunity in a new country.

Directed by Spanish filmmaker Almudena Carracedo, the film aired nationally on public television\’s acclaimed documentary film series, P.O.V., in early September as a Labor Day special. The film also was featured in the 2007 AFL-CIO Labor Film Fest in Washington, D.C.

The Labor & Community Film series is sponsored by the Labor Education Service of the University of Minnesota.  Admission is free and open to the public. Sponsors for "Made in L.A." include Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, LES, and the Human Rights Program in partnership with Active Voice.
