MAPE endorses Anderson Kelliher for governor

“We believe Speaker Kelliher’s proven leadership skills and her ability to manage the state in difficult times make her the strongest candidate,” said MAPE Statewide President Chet Jorgenson.

“Speaker Kelliher is willing to bring people together to solve problems in a crisis. She has a history of respect for state workers and the jobs they do. It is for these reasons that MAPE’s elected officials endorsed Speaker Kelliher for governor of Minnesota.”

The endorsement followed a two-day political conference where MAPE elected officials met one-on-one with gubernatorial candidates. At the end of the process, Anderson Kelliher, a DFLer, “stood out above the rest,” MAPE Executive Director Jim Monroe said.

MAPE Executive Director Jim Monroe introduces the union\’s choice for governor, Margaret Anderson Kelliher, at a state Capitol news conference.

At a state Capitol news conference announcing the endorsement, Anderson Kelliher thanked MAPE members for their support and for their efforts to address the state budget shortfall. Earlier this year, members identified some $350 million in savings in state operations, but Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty ignored their recommendations.

“As your next governor, I will be your partner,” Anderson Kelliher said. “I will not dismiss your hard work . . . I will be a governor who will listen to all Minnesotans for your ideas.”

In the coming months, the union will be training members to participate in next year’s political caucuses and become delegates to support Anderson Kelliher at the DFL Party state convention, Monroe said.

AFSCME, the largest state employee union, has endorsed former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton for governor.

“We will work for the Speaker,” Monroe said. “Our brothers and sisters in AFSCME will work for their candidate.” But both unions will come together for the general election, he said.

MAPE represents more than 12,700 state employees. MAPE’s professionals provide essential services to the citizens of Minnesota, such as keeping lakes and rivers clean, protecting against food-borne illnesses and identifying pandemics.
