The purpose of MAPE Day on the Hill is to foster one-on-one conversations between members of the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees and their elected officials. MAPE represents nearly 12,000 professional employees who work for the State of Minnesota.
The day began in the Great Hall at the state Capitol. MAPE members heard from influential speakers including state Senate Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller, state House Majority Leader Tony Sertich and state Representative Erin Murphy. Members were then given a quick rundown on how to lobby their legislators and the issues of importance to MAPE this year.
With information and confidence, participants split up to lobby their legislators. In total, members had face-to-face meetings with nearly 100 legislators.
MAPE members utilized Day on the Hill to lobby their legislators to support early passage of the MAPE contract (SF 2620 - HF 3138) and workforce planning and retention legislation (SF 2736 – HF 3095) which aims to ease the impending workforce transition.
MAPE President Chet Jorgenson was pleased with the results.
"We had a great turnout. Our members put our issues on the radar screen for their legislators. The only way we\'re going to have success at the Legislature is when elected officials understand our issues. Participants at MAPE Day on the Hill did a great job in lobbying their legislators for passage of our contract and other MAPE legislative priorities," Jorgenson said.
First time attendee Ann Hill from Local 1101 enjoyed her Day on the Hill experience. "It was really well organized and we got a good response from our elected officials. It was also great that legislative leadership was there for the morning event."
MAPE Day on the Hill is organized by the MAPE Government Relations Committee. Committee member Rubin Latz handled the logistical arrangements and deserves significant thanks for his efforts.
