As Congress and the Minnesota Legislature debate changes in immigration laws and policies, a broad coalition will hold the "Minnesota March for Immigration with Dignity" Sunday, April 9, starting at 2:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Paul.
The march is sponsored by the Alliance for Fair Immigration Reform of Minnesota (AFFIRM), and its member organizations, including a number of unions.
March organizers seek immigration reform that includes:
- A path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants;
- Family reunification for families who wait many years to be together;
- Protection of workers' rights; and
- Dignity and civil liberty for all.
March organizers oppose measures advocated by some federal and state officials that would transform millions of hard-working immigrants into felons, criminalize charitable and religious assistance of undocumented immigrants and separate families.
"What Congress chooses to do in the next two weeks will determine the fate of millions of immigrant families and their children," organizers said. "The very character of our nation is at stake."
