Minneapolis Building Trades sponsor Aquatennial block party

This year\’s event — Friday, July 18, from 5-11 p.m. — will be called the "Labor Neighborhood Block Party." Nicollet Mall from 3rd St. to 4th St. will be closed to all traffic and will feature food, drink, and free music. The public is welcome.

The featured musical acts will be headliner Blues Traveler, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and Tim Mahoney.

Event organizers say the "Labor Neighborhood Block Party" will be the largest free outdoor concert in the state.

Signing on as a major sponsor for the Minneapolis Aquatennial is a first for the Minneapolis Building Trades Council.

"To be able to have a flagship community event we can call our own — that\’s a lot of marketing for us," said Jenny Leabo, director of marketing and public relations for the Minneapolis Building Trades Council.

Leabo said almost all of the Council\’s affiliates contributed funds towards sponsoring the event.

"If we truly want the community to understand what we do, this is an incredible opportunity," she added.

Sponsoring the Aquatennial block party means that the Minneapolis Building Trades Council will be featured in all of the Aquatennial\’s marketing — including news conferences, radio ads, newspaper ads, and the Aquatennial guide.

Signage at the Labor Neighborhood Block Party will highlight the event\’s sponsorship by the Minneapolis Building Trades.

The Aquatennial\’s website displays the Minneapolis Building Trades logo as one of the event\’s "Premiere Sponsors" alongside logos from Target, CenterPoint Energy, U.S. Bank, and other prominent corporations.

With sponsorship of the Aquatennial, the Minneapolis Building Trades also gained membership for the first time in the Downtown Council, an organization promoting downtown Minneapolis.

Aquatennial events this year run from July 12-27.
