Minneapolis union member appointed to Winter Carnival royalty

Everyone loves a parade, the saying goes, but especially Louis Ryg. A 20-year member of SEIU Local 63, Ryg spends much of his free time volunteering to help stage community festivals and parades for celebrations including the Minneapolis Aquatennial, the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and even Pasadena, California’s Tournament of Roses.

For this year?s Winter Carnival, Ryg has been honored with the volunteer appointment as ?Captain of the King?s Guard.? He adds: ?my Guards and I are all workers.?

?We bring good will and a lot of friendship,? Ryg explains, noting that the King?s Guard makes nearly 400 appearances during the year for the Winter Carnival. ?We sing songs, we dance, we march,? Ryg says. ?It?s fun.?

In 1995, Ryg served the Winter Carnival as Sergeant of the King?s Guard. From 1991-1993, he was a Vice Commodore for the Minneapolis Aquatennial. In 2001, he was the Aquatennial?s Captain, the highest-ranking volunteer. At the request of a friend, he also is the organizer for a mid-June parade for St. Louis Park.

?It?s my love of parades,? Ryg explains simply. ?It?s a niche I fell into.? To pursue this love, Ryg takes vacation time from his job as the assistant engineer at Phillips Community School in Minneapolis.

?I?d like to thank Local 63 and thank the unions for all their support building the Ice Palace,? Ryg adds. ?It?s a good plug for unions. We do give back to our community.?
