Minnesota House approves state bonding bill

Both measures contain projects important to organized labor, including:

• University of Minnesota Biomedical Research Authority
• Central Corridor Light Rail line
• Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center
• Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) for the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MNSCU)
• Union Depot in St. Paul

"Our state needs an economic boost and the bonding bill contains thousands of jobs. We need those jobs now," Minnesota AFL-CIO President Ray Waldron said.

The House bill passed 99-34 on a bipartisan vote.

"There are a lot of good things in this bill, a lot of things that are necessities," said Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City.

In addition to providing money for numerous construction projects, the legislation includes funding for local parks and trails, wetland and prairie restoration and improvements in wastewater treatment.

A conference committee will reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions, which will then go back for another vote before being presented to the governor.
