Minnesotans will have the opportunity to support candidates for U.S. president and Minnesota Legislature and discuss issues at political party precinct caucuses Tuesday, March 1.
Caucuses will start at 7 p.m. at locations around the state. For more information and to find a caucus location, see the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.
Unlike elections, which are run by local and state government election officials, precinct caucuses are run by political parties. Parties planning to hold caucuses on March 1 include the state’s two largest – the Democratic-Farmer-Labor and Republican parties – as well as the Green Party, Independence and Libertarian parties, among others.
The parties plan to conduct presidential preference ballots that will be tallied and reported to the media. In addition, caucus participants can bring resolutions on issues for debate and possible inclusion in the party platform. They also can seek to become delegates to party conventions where candidates for state Legislature will be endorsed.
To participate, you must be eligible to vote in the November general election and live in the precinct. You also must generally agree with the principles of the political party hosting the caucus.
