New union grocery, Lunds, opens in downtown Minneapolis

The new 20,000-square-foot Lunds will be a full-service grocery store staffed by members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 653.

About 55 members of UFCW Local 653 will be working at the new store, reported Steve Milner, Local 653 business representative. He said about 40 of the staff are new hires while the rest are transfers from other Lunds stores.

Except for a few managers, everyone working at the new store will be a UFCW member. “Cashier, stock, deli — those are all our members,” Milner said.

An opening ceremony for the new Lunds will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting at 10:00 a.m. Expect a crowd — and lots of free samples!

The new Lunds grocery store at 1201 Hennepin will share a parking lot with a new Lunds Wines and Spirits liquor store, located at 1208 Harmon Place, also opening June 14.

Like the Lunds grocery which opened in 2006 at Central and University, the new grocery store will feature an extensive deli and wide selection of prepared foods. A rain garden at the Hennepin store will include tables and seating at an outdoor patio.

Lund Food Holdings, Inc. operates 10 Lunds grocery stores and 11 Byerly’s grocery stories in the metro area, all staffed by members of UFCW Locals 653 and 1189.

“They’ve expanded their business quite a bit and they have plans for the future,” Milner said. “We’re just happy to be part of it and be a partner with them.”

Lunds plans to open two new stores in the next three years, one in Wayzata and one in downtown St. Paul.
