Northwest Airlines workers to protest corporate greed

The event will be Wednesday, May 30, at the state Capitol in St. Paul starting with a picnic at noon, followed by a rally. Congressman Keith Ellison will be among the speakers, organizers said. The rally is being organized by the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA and the Air Line Pilots Association.

NWA has a new executive stock plan that will give 400 executives $382 million in equity in the carrier – a 4.9 percent share of the reorganized airline. In giveaways approved by a U.S. bankruptcy judge, CEO Doug Steenland will receive $26.6 million of that equity. Four executive vice presidents will get between $10 million and $13.5 million each.

Meanwhile, Northwest Airlines workers have endured hundreds of millions of dollars in pay cuts. Many workers now earn what they did 20 years ago — and are struggling to stay afloat.

"Help send a message to our elected officials that corporate greed and excessive management compensation must be stopped!" unions representing Northwest workers said in announcing the event.
