Striking AMFA members will unveil their new corporate campaign against Northwest Airlines at a rally Saturday, Nov. 19, featuring strategist Ray Rogers.
The "Solidarity, Strategy and Fightback Rally" will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Bloomington Jefferson High School, 4001 W. 102nd St., (corner of France Ave. and 102nd St.), Bloomington. It is free and open to the public.
Rogers, director of Corporate Campaign, Inc., in New York City, "will present a strategy to defeat the latest series of attacks by Northwest Airlines and other corporations that use outsourcing, permanent replacements and bankruptcy courts to destroy workers," the union said in announcing the event. "His approach is to confront power with power."
Roger is perhaps best known for his work with Local P-9 during the Hormel strike in Austin, Minn., 20 years ago. Also scheduled to speak will be other "prominent union and political leaders," AMFA said.
Some 4,500 mechanics, custodians and cleaners represented by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association have been on strike against Northwest since Aug. 19, and most have been permanently replaced by the airline. In September, Northwest filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is seeking to abrogate all its contracts with unions unless workers agree to major concessions.
