The U.S. House of Representatives, called back to Washington for a one-day session, passed the bill 247-161 with only two Republican votes.
“Simply put, this vote keeps us on the path to economic recovery,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said. “Republicans who continue to fight for tax cuts for the super rich did everything in their power to defeat funding for teachers and firefighters, adding to the laundry list of anti-jobs votes they’ve taken.”
The legislation provides aid to struggling state and local governments who otherwise would be laying off workers due to the sluggish economy. The aid is fully funded in part by closing tax loopholes that allow corporations to ship jobs overseas.
