Play ‘Wellstone’ returns for September run

The play will run Sept. 2-21 at the Sabes Jewish Community Center, 4330 Cedar Lake Rd. S., St. Louis Park. It traces Wellstone\’s life from college wrestling days to his move to Minnesota to teach at Carleton College and then on to his organizing campaigns and his entry into state and national politics.

"Wellstone!" premiered in fall 2006 at St. Paul\’s History Theatre, which commissioned the play from local playwright Mark Rosenwinkel. The playwright collaborated with folk singer Larry Long, who wrote original music for the play.

Rosenwinkel is a member of Actors Equity and AFTRA while Long is a member of American Federation of Musicians Local 1000.

For the premiere two years ago, creators Rosenwinkel and Long watched as other actors and singers performed on stage. For this year\’s production, however, Rosenwinkel will play the part of Wellstone while Long will sing and play the guitar as the troubadour.

Post-show discussions with the artists will be held Sunday, Sept. 7, after the 2 p.m. show; Saturday, Sept. 13, after the 8 p.m. show; and Thursday, Sept. 18, after the 7:30 p.m. show.

Tickets are $18 for Jewish Community Center members, $20 for non-members and $16 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call 952-381-3499 or visit www.sabesjcc.com/wellstone/info.htm.
