Minnesota Labor 2004 coordinator Jon Youngdahl and the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride are among honorees at Progressive Minnesota?s annual Winning Big banquet Sept. 18.
The banquet will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m. at the UFCW Local 789 hall, 266 Hardman Ave. S. in South St. Paul. Tickets are $40. Call 651-641-6199 for more information.
Youngdahl ? currently on leave as director of the Minnesota State Council of SEIU ? ?has led the way toward a new majority in Minnesota by uniting the labor and progressive movements,? Progressive Minnesota says.
?Whether addressing farm policy and health-care issues at MN COACT; fighting Kaiser Aluminum with the Steelworkers; running statewide campaigns for progressive candidates; or as leader of Workers for Wellstone, SEIU Minnesota, and now Minnesota Labor 2004, he has pushed us all to think big and do the work it takes to win,? the award announcement says. ?He has also been an invaluable adviser and mentor to struggling political campaigns and young organizers.?
The Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, the organization says, was a ?landmark mobilization? that ?is a model of coalition-building and action, bringing together new allies from labor, religious and community groups in Minnesota and throughout the country.?
More than 80 riders from Minnesota joined more than 800 other riders from 10 other states in a cross-country bus tour last fall, ending in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
Progressive Minnesota is also honoring the Headwaters Foundation for Justice for its ?groundbreaking work in the field of philanthropy.? Headwaters ?stepped forward as a leader and nurtured critical work in diverse communities? and ?built leadership and capacity to set the wheels of change in motion.?
