Their contract with Qwest set to expire Saturday, members of the Communication Workers of America will rally Friday to call for a fair settlement.
The rally will be held Friday, Aug. 12, at noon outside the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 S. 6th St., in downtown Minneapolis. CWA Local 7200, which organized the event, is inviting all union members and supporters to attend.
Some 25,000 CWA members, including about 4,000 in Minnesota, are covered by the contract. Workers have voted to authorize their leadership to call a strike if a fair settlement cannot be reached.
Contract talks are progressing slowly, the union said, with workers who haven't had a wage or pension contribution increase since 2001 now struggling to maintain health benefits. The theme of the rally is "We are the front line, not the bottom line!"
