Stopping violence against women will be the focus of a rally Thursday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m. at the state Capitol.
The Sheila Wellstone Institute, named for the late wife of U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone who was a tireless advocate for ending domestic violence, is supporting the event. This year the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the federal legislation that funds battered women's shelters, hotlines, and crisis centers, is set to expire. Rally organizers hope to send a message to Congress to reauthorize the legislation.
March 3 also is Violence Against Women Action Day. The rally will start at 1:30 p.m. in the Capitol rotunda. Participants will then march one block to the offices of the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women for the unveiling of the 2004 Clothesline Project and reception.
Organizers of the rally are the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women, the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault, the Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition, and the Minnesota Network on Abuse in Later Life. For more information
