Rally today for St. Paul living wage law

Organizations in St. Paul kick off their campaign for a new living wage law today with a rally at Rice Park.

The kick-off event starts at 5 p.m. at the park, located one block north of Kellogg Blvd. between Washington and Market Streets. At 5:45 p.m., participants will start doorknocking to build support for the proposed ordinance.

Participants in the rally and doorknock may park for free at the St. Paul Labor Centre, 411 Mahoney (aka Main) St.

The proposed law would cover businesses that receive substantial city funding through contracts and subsidies. It would require they pay their employees a “living wage,” defined as 130 percent of the poverty level for a family four — about $12.09 an hour.

A campaign for a similar measure was launched last week in Minneapolis. Both cities currently have living wage language on the books, but proponents of the new ordinance say the measures are not strong enough and are not adequately enforced.

Groups supporting the St. Paul campaign include labor, faith and community organizations.
