Rally Tuesday to support paid family leave in Minnesota

Supporters of paid family leave for all Minnesotans will rally Tuesday at noon near the state Capitol.

The Minnesotans for Paid Family Leave Coalition is organizing the demonstration outside the northeast corner of the Minnesota State Office Building, 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., in St. Paul. It is across the street from the Capitol, which is under construction.

“As Minnesotans, we believe in taking care of each other. When our loved ones are at their most vulnerable, we need to be there to care for them,” organizers said.

“Too many of us have to make impossible choices between our work and our family. The MN Paid Family & Medical Leave program is a common sense solution. But time is running out!”

A proposed law that would require businesses to provide up to 12 weeks of paid family leave has passed the DFL-controlled state Senate, but no action has been taken in the Republican-controlled House.

“Currently only 13 percent of workers have access to paid family leave,” said the bill’s author, Senator Katie Sieben, DFL-Newport. “Minnesotans should be able to take time away from work to care for a new baby or an elderly parent without jeopardizing their economic security.”

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is supporting the legislation.
