Rally Wednesday at Kowalski’s stores as union renews talks with other grocers

The rallies, organized by United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1189, will be from 3 to 7 p.m. at Kowalski\’s Grand Ave Market, 1261 Grand Ave., St. Paul, and Kowalski\’s CUB, 1059 Meadowlands Drive, White Bear Lake (right off of Highway 96).

Negotiations began in January between Local 1189 and a group of St. Paul grocers, including Cub, Jerry’s Foods, Rainbow Foods, Kowalski’s and Festival Foods. As of June 23, all the grocers except Kowalski’s had agreed to contract extensions.

“As of August 1, Kowalski’s made the poor choice of declaring impasse and implementing their last offer,” Local 1189 President Don Seaquist said in bargaining report on the union’s website. “Your union believes this is a blatant violation of your rights and has filed charges with the National Labor Relations Board.”

Talks are scheduled to resume Tuesday with Lunds/Byerly’s and Thursday with the remaining retailers, the union said.

The union said Kowalski\’s is attempting to destroy the grocery pension plans by withdrawing from all of them and starting their own 401k .

“This proposal affects not just our members working at Kowalski\’s but EVERY member working in the retail supermarket industry,” Seaquist said. “Our local union, with assistance from our international, will take every action available to us in order to stop this implementation.”

The UFCW said Kowalski’s also is seeking a wage freeze and to replace full-time positions in its stores with part-time, minimum wage jobs.
