"Get the Job Done!" will be the theme of a rally Wednesday, July 6, at 1:30 p.m. at the state Capitol, as the partial shutdown of state government continues.
More than 9,000 Minnesota public employees are out of work. Many public services -- from payments to nonprofit agencies and hospitals to enforcement of prevailing wage laws -- are suspended or reduced. The shutdown is the first ever in state history.
Wednesday's rally has been called by unions representing state employees and nonprofits who provide state-funded services. "Legislators and the governor have had 6+ months to reach a responsible agreement on the state budget," the groups said in announcing the rally. "They didn't. Minnesotans from every walk of life are living with the consequences."
GOP Gov. Pawlenty, the DFL majority in the Senate and the GOP majority in the House failed to reach a budget agreement by the end of the fiscal year at midnight Thursday, triggering a shutdown of many services.
