From Tom Beer:
Steve,
Your article today about the bridge collapse was very good. I hope our elected officials can be as honest in taking responsibility and action to correct our long standing deficiencies in public investment. Democrats in particular should not be afraid to lead the way. Casting blame is not what\’s needed, but accessing and taking responsibility must occur.

From Matt Gladue, director of the Workers Interfaith Network:
First, Workers Interfaith Network shares prayers for those injured and killed as a result of the tragic collapse of the I-35W bridge.

We pray in a special way with all workers injured and possibly killed in the calamity. And we pray in thanksgiving for all of the workers who served and continue to serve as first responders and caregivers, and for all workers who labored to hold the community together in a time of tragedy. They are heroes doing God’s work in the world.

Finally, we pray in thanksgiving for the role we know that workers will play in carrying our community through this difficult time. We pray in thanksgiving for the workers who will carry our community on public transit around this wounded place in the city. We pray in thanksgiving for those who will rebuild this place. And we pray in thanksgiving for those who will help members of our community heal and mourn.

From Congresswoman Betty McCollum, DFL-4th District:
In a moment yesterday evening, the collapse of the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis made innocent victims out of everyday commuters. It was an absolute catastrophe that will change Minnesota forever.

While the world witnessed images of inexplicable destruction, first responders from throughout the Metro area worked to save lives. My prayers are with the victims, the responders and all of the families who have been so profoundly affected by this disaster.
I-35W is a federal highway and the federal government has the responsibility to investigate and fully address the consequences resulting from this bridge collapse. The entire Minnesota congressional delegation is committed to work together to provide a comprehensive response for our citizens.

It will take a coordinated federal, state and local response to ensure that victims are assisted and all metropolitan area transportation infrastructure is investigated for structural safety. Alternative transportation routes will impact the Metro area and citizens will need to have patience as traffic patterns are adjusted.

This was a difficult day for Minnesota. We pray for the injured, unaccounted for and those lost in this tragedy. Now is the time to come together as neighbors and Minnesotans.
