Carpenters, lathers, piledrivers and millwrights in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota have ratified new contracts ranging from one to five years in length.
The Lakes and Plains Regional Council of Carpenters and Joiners, which represents union carpenters, lathers, millwrights and floor coverers, made the announcement Friday regarding the new contracts.
?We are very pleased that a long, yet productive, negotiation process has been successfully completed,? said Scott Malcolm, executive secretary-treasurer of the Regional Council. ?Increasing health care costs were of great concern to both the union and the contractors. This added pressure to the negotiations. In the end, a satisfactory solution was agreed upon. Contractors also committed $1 million per year to Apprenticeship and Journeyperson upgrade training.
?Our members can look forward to continuing strong relationships with our contractors and will, as always, provide highly-skilled and professional craftsmanship.?
Carpenters and piledrivers from the Twin City Metro Area ratified a three-year agreement with the Associated General Contractors, the Carpentry Contractors Association and the Minnesota Drywall and Plaster Association.
Carpenters from Local Union 361 in Duluth ratified a three-year agreement with the Associated General Contractors and the Twin Ports Contractors Association. Local 361 represents both commercial and residential carpenters and lathers.
Local Union 1091, which represents carpenters in Bismarck, N.D., ratified a three-year agreement and Local 1176 representing carpenters in Fargo, N.D., reached a one-year agreement.
Millwrights in Virginia, Minn., as well as Fargo and Bismarck, also ratified new contracts. Local 1348 in Virginia ratified a five-year contract with the contractors. Locals 1091 in Bismarck and 1176 in Fargo ratified three-year contracts.
Carpenters from Local 587 and Lathers from Local 190L in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, S.D., ratified a three-year agreement with area contractors.

It is affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners that represents more than 520,000 highly-skilled men and women in the North America building trades industry.
