The shoppers will be given a free raffle ticket, with the first prize being a freezer and $100 worth of meat. Eight $30 grocery gift certificates also will be awarded in the drawing.
The Cooper\'s County Market drawing will be the kick-off for a series of similar promotions at other union grocers planned this summer by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 653. "We\'re going to be doing about 10 during the summer," reported Ray Sawicky, Local 653 president.
Shoppers at each store will receive a flyer thanking them for patronizing a grocery store that pays family wages and benefits and also will get a ticket for a drawing at that store.
Sawicky explained that the promotional campaign is part of an effort "to hold market share for our union grocers." Union grocers nationwide face increasing competition from non-union grocery stores included in increasingly larger Wal-Mart and Target stores.
Local 653\'s promotional campaign, Sawicky said, is "a way to battle Wal-Mart and Target without bad-mouthing them."
Local 653 recently settled a new contract with Minneapolis area grocers covering 12,000 retail meat and grocery workers who work for 25 employers at 100 stores.
To express thanks for the new contract, Local 653 ran a quarter-page ad in the Star Tribune listing union grocery stores and encouraging shoppers to patronize those stores because they pay good wages and benefits.
UFCW Local 653 representatives will be at the Cooper\'s County Market in Chaska handing out flyers and raffle tickets from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Sawicky said Cooper\'s County Market ran ads in the Chaska Herald announcing the promotion.
